As the final step in what can sometimes be an arduous process, strategy execution is vitally important to get right for your company, especially if it is a key component of its business transformation.

This means translating the strategic initiatives into specific measures that your organization and management will undertake. Identifying the fundamental building blocks executives can use to implement the organisation’s vision and strategy will be a major challenge.

Often strategies fail, not because of poor conceptualization, but simply because the many obstacles that prevent great plans from reaching effective implementation are underestimated. This day-long event will focus on two critical parts of making the journey to strategy development come alive.

The first part of the day focuses on your role as a leader in gaining the commitment of your extended team to the strategic priorities of your organization.  This session provides an overview of this commitment process – particularly how a leader can struggle with his team in not only developing a set of strategic priorities and initiatives but also to gain the up-front energy and commitment for his area of responsibility. We will take the lessons from this journey and apply them to your own situation.

The second part of the day focuses on follow-through and the nuts and bolts of execution.  How many times have you heard that the right people were not informed or included; the timing was misjudged; the capabilities were not there; or too many priorities were fighting with each other?  We will examine in more detail different types of strategic initiatives and how you can maximize their odds of success.

Finally, Prof. Henderson will respond to your own particular challenges.

Professor Henderson helps companies achieve and sustain their competitive advantage either at a business unit, corporate or global level through directing custom specific executive programs, facilitating strategy workshops and teaching executives. While at Babson and IMD, he has designed, delivered and/or directed programs for a number of companies in a variety of different industries including healthcare: Serono, UCB Pharma, Novartis, Blue Cross Blue Shield; capital intensive industries; OMV, UPM Kymmene, Metso; professional and financial services: Deloitte, Royal Bank of Scotland, Zurich Financial Services; high technology: EMC, France Telecom, Battelle Memorial Institute; consumer products: Estée Lauder, Carlsberg and economic development agencies: Scottish Enterprise.

James Henderson main research interest concerns developing and implementing strategy under uncertainty.

Professor Henderson has published several important articles on investment timing in the Strategic Management Journal and Academy of Management Journal. He has also authored numerous papers on supply chain and cluster competitiveness including one in the Strategic Management Journal. Many of his ideas have been incorporated in the 2005 Strategic Management Society Book Series, titled Restructuring Strategy, co-edited with Professor Karel Cool, INSEAD and Réné Abate, Boston Consulting Group. In the area of corporate entrepreneurship, his research has appeared in Management Decision (best paper for 2008), Frontiers of Entrepreneurship and Journal of Business Venturing, leading research journals in the field.

Professor Henderson has also developed over 30 published IMD, INSEAD and Babson cases, of which one, Heineken Buckler Beer, won the Best Selling Case in Europe. Furthermore, he sits on the Editorial Board of the Strategic Management Journal as well as the Annual Conference on Corporate Strategy.
